It always makes for a good wildlife image when landing birds make a straight on approach.

Patience is essential in wildlife photography. Sometimes you are rewarded with an image that makes either the cold fingers of winter or the pesky insects of summer all seem well worth it. After the cold finally won out after sitting for a few hours at 20 degrees I gave up. Heading for my home with an empty memory card in my camera and only a half mile from my house this Red-tailed hawk sat perched right next to the road. Pulled over, got out, took about 15 images and it was all over in less than a minute. Sometimes it's just as good to be lucky!

This Great Blue Heron dives for his dinner at a local pond in my area. They're fun to watch as they stealthy move along the shoreline to hunt for their next meal.

This Common Merganser mom and her closely guarded chicks take a morning cruise on a local reservoir here in North Central Massachusetts. All baby ducks are cute but these are one of my favorites. Last summer one mother had adopted another mothers offspring due to abandonment or a tragedy and she was seen with 40 babies. I photographed and counted them. What a sight!

This female Eastern Bluebird is very busy building her nest in preparation of the 4-5 pale blue eggs she will soon lay. Incubation takes about 2 weeks.

The beavers are getting busy as always. And as always they don't like our company. The beaver tail slap happens so quickly and with so much force that most people don't realize that their rear feet become inverted above their back in conjunction with the tail slamming down on the water. It can be heard from a good distance away.

Made a brief stop at the wildlife sanctuary in Western Massachusetts on Thursday Feb. 11th.  I was headed toward a nearby photo shop so I threw my photo gear into my vehicle just in case I had time to stop on the way by. Spotted some birds as I exited my truck. I wasn't really dressed for an outdoor photo session in 20 degree weather. When my fingers started to ache even with gloves on it was time to bail out of there. I did manage to grab a few shots of Ring-billed Gull and a Coopers Hawk.

Taking advantage of the mild weather this week here in Western Massachusetts was a priority for me. I took a ride to the Audubon sanctuary near my area to search for images along the Connecticut River Valley. The valley is a major flyway for migrating birds annually and is abundant with wildlife. Acting on a good tip from friend and fellow photographer Dale Monette we made the trip. We were rewarded with a day of photographing Red Tails, Sharp-shinned hawks and Northern Harriers. Here is one of the captures of the day.
